Funds are dispersed in cash grants paid directly to vendors. In
most instances, families eligible to use Operation Fuel dollars
have incomes between 151% and 200% of the federal poverty level
($30,975 - $41,300 for a family of 4) and therefore make too
much money to be eligible for public assistance. Residents who
qualify for funding can receive a maximum amount of $400 per
season. Funds are paid directly to the utility companies or fuel
oil vendors to pay for energy bills. Our heating season begins
December 1 and runs through May 31. After May 31, people can
apply for energy assistance for life threatening situations.
Most state energy assistance programs end on April 15. In the
event of a cold snap in the spring or utility shut-offs
following the end of the winter moratorium (in which utilities
are restricted from denying service) residents may qualify for
an Operation Fuel energy grant.
If you believe you are eligible for energy assistance, please
contact the
fuel bank
in your town. They will instruct you on filling out the
application and have information regarding other programs you
may qualify for and not know about. The fuel banks provide an
important link because they understand the needs of the clients,
and they are in direct contact with both the utility companies
and the Operation Fuel staff.
