Operation Fuel Program Helps Small Businesses with Energy Expenses

Nearly 800 Connecticut small business owners received a total of $779,000 in energy grants, while learning about energy conservation in the initial year of Operation Fuel’s Project/BEST small business program, which is the first of its kind in the nation.

Over the past year, Project/BEST awarded energy grants of $1,000 each to 779 small businesses in Hartford, New Haven, Waterbury, New London and Bridgeport. Many of the participating businesses were owned by either women or minorities. The majority of small businesses that received grants were retail establishments, professional services, restaurants, and personal care services.

In addition to helping businesses with escalating energy expenses, Project/BEST also provided business owners with information on ways to reduce their energy expenses throughout the year.  Each grant recipient attended one of 10 Project/BEST energy efficiency workshops, which included presentations on energy conservation and utility-run programs available to small businesses.
